Configuring Netscape 6.x to Check E-mail and Read News



To configure Netscape 6.x to check your OSU e-mail account, first start the Netscape program.

  1. Go to the "Tasks" pull-down menu and choose "Mail & Newsgroups".

  2. In the new window that opens, go to the "Edit" pull-down menu and "Mail & Newsgroups Account Settings..."

  3. Configure the outgoing mail server:

    • Click on "Outgoing Mail (SMTP)" The server name should be set to smtp.service.ohio-state.edu ***

      ***Note: If you connect using an Internet service provider other than The Ohio State University, you will need to use your ISP's outgoing mail server. See this page for details.

  4. Configure an e-mail account:

    • Click the "New Account" button
    • Choose "ISP or email provider" and click Next
    • Enter your full name in the "Your Name" line.
    • Under "Email Address" type your e-mail address (name.#@osu.edu) and click Next.
    • Choose POP as the type of Incoming Mail Server. For the Server Name enter: pop.service.ohio-state.edu and click Next
    • Enter your User Name (typically name.#) and click Next.
    • Enter a name for the account entry, or leave it the default and click Next.
    • Click Finish to complete the setup.

  5. Configure a news account:

    • Click the "New Account" button
    • Choose "Newsgroup account" and click Next.
    • Enter your full name in the "Your Name" line.
    • Under "Email Address" type your e-mail address (name.#@osu.edu) and click Next.
    • For "Server Name" enter: nntp.service.ohio-state.edu , then click Next.
    • Enter a name for the account entry, or leave it the default and click Next.
    • Click Finish to complete the setup.


Note: In Netscape 6 it is not possible to change the incoming mail (POP) server or news (NNTP)server address once an entry has been created. If you need to change the incoming mail server or news server address, you will need to remove the entry and repeat step 2 (for mail) or 3 (for news), starting with clicking the "New Account" button.
