Web Browsers for Mac OS X



All new Macs ship with Safari installed for web browsing. There exists a new generation of web browsers that provide additional features users find useful. The list of browsers available for Mac OS X includes:

  • Internet Explorer, which is no longer available from Microsoft. It is free, works in both Mac OS 9 and OS X, and is compatible with most web sites. The current version number is 5.2.3 for OS X and 5.1.6 for Mac OS 9.x. It does not provide tabbed browsing nor does it have any kind of popup blocking software built into it.
  • Note: Microsoft announced that it has stopped distributing and supporting Internet Explorer for Macintosh as of the end of January 2006. The current version will still work, but there is no guarantee that it will work in the future with websites or with plug-ins released after the termination of support.

  • Netscape Navigator, which is available from Netscape. The current version is 9.0.6 for Mac OS X. It is compatible with many web pages. The current version is 7.2 for Mac OS 9. It does not provide tabbed browsing or popup blocking software built into it.
  • Note: AOL has announced that it will no longer support Netscape Navigator after March 1, 2008. AOL has posted a statement detailing the end of support for Netscape Navigator.

  • Mozilla, which is available from Mozilla. It is free and works with Mac OS X. The current version number is 1.7.13 and it provides tabbed browsing. It does not come with any sort of popup blocking software built into it.
  • Note: The Mozilla organization has announced that it will be discontinuing development of the Mozilla web browser. The organization will now focus on FireFox.

  • Camino, which is available from Mozilla. It is free and works with Mac OS X. The current version is 1.5.5. and it provides tabbed browsing and has popup blocking software built into it. It has the same core web browsing software built into it as Firefox and Mozilla.
  • Safari, which is available from Apple Computer. It is free and works with Mac OS X. The current version is 3.0.4 and it provides tabbed browsing and has built-in popup blocking software built into it. The latest version, which is bundled with Mac OS 10.4.X (Tiger) and Mac OS 10.5.X (Leopard) includes the ability to use RSS services.
  • OmniWeb, which is available from the Omni Group. It costs $29.95 and the current version is 5.6. It has popup blocking software built into it and provides tabbed browsing.
  • iCab, which is available from the iCab Company. It is free and the current version is 4.0.1. (There's a Pro version available for $29.95.) The current version does not provide tabbed browsing or popup blocking, but it does provide a unique feature. It can enter into a Kiosk mode where the the browser fills the entire screen. When in kiosk mode users can be limited to a range of sites and can be prevented from exiting kiosk mode when password protection is enabled.
  • Opera, which is available from the Opera Corporation. It is free and the current version is 8.5.4 for Mac OS 9 and version 9.2.6 for Mac OS X. Version 9.2.6 does provide popup blocking software built in or tabbed browsing.
  • Firefox, which is available from Mozilla. It's free and the current version is 2.0.0.12. It has the same core web browsing software built into it as Netscape Communicator and Mozilla. It provides tabbed browsing and has built-in popup blocking software.
  • SeaMonkey, which is available from Mozilla. It's a web-browser, advanced e-mail and newsgroup client, IRC chat client, and HTML editing made all in one application. The current version is 1.1.8
