Modems and Lightning

Modems and Lightning

The best protection for a computer and modem is to unplug the phone line and unplug all power cords leading to the computer and other devices(printers, cable modems, scanners, etc).

Don't use your computer during thunderstorms or when power disturbances (brownouts and blackouts) are likely.

If you don't unplug everything - the next best protection for your modem is to unplug the phone line to the modem.

Most people should not attempt to repair a modem themselves. Often, a better choice is to replace the modem. Check with the manufacturer of the modem, if it's under warranty, they may have you send it to them, you may have to pay shipping and be without a modem during the repair/exchange process.
