Keychain Access Problems

The Keychain is a feature of the Mac OS that collects account information, storing it for use for when users try to access password-protected web sites and e-mail or file servers. The contents of the Keychain are hidden from the casual observer and the entire Keychain can be locked to prevent unauthorized use.

If you lock your Keychain and then forget your password, you will need to delete the Keychain and it's contents. All previously stored username and password information in the Keychain will be lost, but it will allow a new Keychain to be created. To delete the keychain:

  1. From Applications -> Utilities, open the Keychain Access utility, select Show Keychains from the Views menu and then highlight the locked Keychain in the list that appears.
  2. Go to the File menu and select Delete Keychain [name of the Keychain you selected].
  3. A window with three buttons will appear. Click on Delete References & Files and the Keychain will be deleted.

The system will begin a new Keychain the next time a password protected resource is requested, but the new Keychain will not be locked.
