Connecting to the OSUnet VPN (Windows and Mac OS X)
Before you begin, you will need to download the Cisco VPN client software and documentation from: http://osusls.osu.edu. The current version is 5.0.01 (for Windows) or 4.9.01 (for Mac).
Connecting to the OSU VPN Service: Windows
- Install the Cisco VPN client by double-clicking the file you downloaded: ciscovpn4_03osu.exe. If you receive an "Open File - Security Warning" (when running WinXP SP 2), click the "Run" button to continue. If you receive a message stating that the client has not passed Windows certification, click “Continue Anyway” to proceed.
- Click "Continue" on the "ZipFree 2000! Self-Extractor" dialog box to extract the file contents.
- Once this is complete, the actual installation will begin. Step through the installation, clicking "Next" or "Yes" and let the program run. This process could take several minutes.
- To complete the installation, it will be necessary to reboot your system. Choose "Yes, I want to restart my computer now" when given the option and click the "Finish" button.
- Once your machine reboots, click the “Start” button and navigate to All Programs -> Cisco Systems VPN Client for Windows XP or Programs -> Cisco Systems VPN Client for all other versions of Windows. Look in this group and you will see an icon called “VPN Client”; click this to launch the Cisco VPN application.
- When the client opens, you will see that a connection to the OSUNet VPN server (vpn.service.ohio-state.edu) has already been created. Double click on the word “OSUnet” in the "Connection Entity" area and you will be presented with a "User Authentication for OSUnet" dialog that asks for your username and password. Enter your OSU Internet (Kerberos) username and password.
- The process will authenticate you as a user and, if successful, a small closed padlock will appear in your System Tray. If authentication fails for any reason, you may be prompted for your username and password until it succeeds or the process cancels.
- To disconnect from your VPN session, right-click the VPN Client (lock) icon and choose "Disconnect", or double click the icon and press the "Disconnect" button in the window that opens. Note: It is important to end your session when you are done to conserve resources.
Connecting to the OSU VPN Service: Mac OS 10.1.5 or later
- Download the Cisco VPN client from site-licensed software.
- Double click the file ciscovpn4_03.hqx to expand it using StuffIt Expander.
- Several files will appear on your desktop. You may need to mount the disk image vpnclientOSU-mac.dmg file if it doesn't mount automatically. Once mounted, open CiscoVPNClient and double click Cisco VPN Client.mpkg to begin the installation.
- Ensure you have the correct version of the Mac OS software. If so, click "Continue," agree to the license and click "Continue" again.
- Select the destination for your install and click "Continue" once more. You may need to click "Install" or provide your system username and password to complete the process.
- Once complete, you may begin your session by double clicking the "VPN Client" application icon located in the Applications directory.
- When the client opens, you will see that a connection to the KRC VPN server has already been created. Double click on the word “OSUnet” in the "Connection Entity" area and you will be presented with a "User Authentication for OSUnet" dialog that asks for your username and password. Enter your OSU Internet (Kerberos) username and password.
- The process will authenticate you as a user and, if successful, a small closed padlock will appear to the left of the "Connection Entity". If authentication fails for any reason, you may be prompted for your username and password until it succeeds or the process cancels.
- To disconnect from your VPN session, press the "Disconnect" button in the Client window. Note: It is important to end your session when you are done to conserve resources.
