Password-Protecting Who Can Send Mail To A List: Confirm

If your Listproc mailing list is being attacked by viruses or other unwanted mail making it through the sending restrictions by forging the "From:" address so that they appear to be coming from a list owner, it's possible to set the list so that the list password must be included in the body for each message sent. This is most useful for lists configured so that only owners can send mail, but it is possible to configure in lists where all subscribers can send as well.

To activate this feature, send mail to:

listproc@lists.acs.ohio-state.edu

The message should have no subject, and in the body of the message include one of the following bolded commands:

conf listname listpassword send-by-owners-confirm
--in order to set the list so that only owners can send, using the list password as confirmation.

conf listname listpassword send-by-subscribers-confirm
--in order to set the list so that only subscribers and owners can send, using the list password as confirmation.

In all of these cases, listname and listpassword should be replaced with the correct information for your list.

Once this feature is activated, all mail sent to the list needs to contain the following line somewhere in the body of the mesasge:

Confirm: listpassword

--This line will be automatically removed by the listprocessor before being sent to all list subscribers. Messages without this line will be rejected and sent to the list owners as with any rejected messages from the list. Warning: It's possible that if the "Confirm" command is sent in an HTML-formatted or otherwise non-plain text message, that the Listprocessor may not be able to identify the command, causing the message to be rejected as unconfirmed, or possibly causing the message to be sent to the list without removing the "Confirm: listpassword" line first.

For general instructions on changing who can send mail to a list, see How can I set my mailing list so that anyone / only subscribers / only owners can send to it? .
