OSUnet VPN service
Why use the OSUnet VPN(Virtual Private Network) service?
There are several reasons why the OSUnet VPN service should be used:- To secure your network traffic between Ohio State and your remote location. Note: Only traffic to and from, osu.edu and ohio-state.edu machines are secured.
- To access Ohio State services that are limited by IP address such as our outgoing mail server, smtp.service.ohio-state.edu
- To possibly access services that are blocked at the Ohio State/Internet boarder. Such as file shares, printers, etc. Note: Some further arrangements may need to be made with your local network administrators in order to access local services that are protected by another layer of security.
How does VPN work?
- The VPN server is configured to accept communications and to authenticate using OSU Internet Username and password.
- Client initiates contact.
- Server and Client connect and create a "tunnel".
Only traffic back and forth to Ohio State servers pass through that "tunnel". OSU uses a "split tunnel" technique such that only traffic intended for osu passes through the VPN. Traffic intended for outside access goes directly, without passing through the VPN. - The end result is when connected via VPN it looks to OSU computers and sytems as if you were connected to the network from inside OSU, not your commercial internet service provider. There is no need to use VPN inside OSU, since you are already inside the OSU network.
