Configuring Outlook Express for Windows to use IMAP



To configure Outlook Express to use IMAP to check your OSU email account:

  1. Launch Outlook Express from the Programs menu
    • (Start-> Program files -> Outlook Express)
    • (Start-> All Programs -> Outlook Express)


  2. Within Outlook Express, open the Internet Accounts panel by choosing the Tools menu and Accounts.


  3. On the top-right corner of this window, choose the Add button then select Mail. This will start the Internet Connection Wizard.


  4. You will be asked for the Display Name, which is the name that will appear on messages that you send (ex. John Smith.Enter your name and choose Next.


  5. Next you will be asked for your email address (ex.lastname.#@osu.edu).Type your email address and choose Next.


  6. The next screen will ask for the Email Server names. For the option "My incoming mail server is a..", you will need to select IMAP from the pull-down menu provided. The box below asks for the address of the "Incoming Mail server" which is imap.service.ohio-state.edu . The address for the "Outgoing mail server" is smtp.service.ohio-state.edu . Enter these addresses and click Next.


  7. On the Internet Mail Logon screen, the account name is you OSU Internet username (i.e. your lastname.#) and the password is, naturally, the password associated with your OSU Internet username. Choose Next and then Finish.


  8. You should now be presented with the "Internet Accounts" window. On the Mail tab, you should see listed the account we just created (may be listed as "imap.service.ohio-state.edu"). Select this acount and choose the Properties button on the right.


  9. On the account properties window, select the Advanced tab. On this tab, under the "Server Port Numbers" heading, you will see "Incoming mail(IMAP)". Directly below this is a checkbox labeled "This server requires a secure connection(SSL). Place a check in this box. You may notice that the port number above changes from 143 to 993. This is to be expected.


  10. Choose the OK button at the bottom to saves these settings changes and then choose Close on the Internet Accounts window.


  11. You will be asked "Would you like to download folders from the mail server you added?". Choose Yes. This will download a list of folders from your IMAP account.


  12. You can then choose OK on the resulting window and begin viewing your mail from the list of mailboxes on the left.
