Configuring Eudora 6.x on the Macintosh to use IMAP service

IMAP is an e-mail protocol that allows you to store all your mail on the server, rather than downloading it to your computer. This allows you to access all the mail in your account from multiple computers.

To configure your OSU account to use IMAP in Eudora 6.x on the Macintosh, do the following:

  1. Start Eudora.
  2. Go to the Special menu and select Settings.
  3. Click on the Getting Started icon.
  4. Enter the following information:

    • Username: Your OSU Internet Username
    • Mail Server: imap.service.ohio-state.edu
    • Real Name: Your First and Last Name
    • SMTP Server***: smtp.service.ohio-state.edu
    • Return Address: lastname.#@osu.edu

***NOTE: If you do not connect to the Internet through OSU, you will need to use your ISP's outgoing mail server. See this page for details.

  5. Click on the Checking Mail icon.
  6. For "Mail Protocol", select IMAP. Check "Save Password" if want Eudora to remember your password.
  7. Click on the SSL icon and set "SSL for IMAP" to Required (Alternate Port)
  8. Click OK.
  9. Create a new message in Eudora and type the following in the message body:
  10. Double click the link the text creates and click Set Setting in the resulting dialog box.
  11. Close the message window without saving the changes.
  12. Check your mail, enter your password, then accept the Security Certificate when presented.
Important: Because all of your e-mail is stored on OSU's server, you will need to be aware of your quota. If you reach or are near your quota, you can drag messages from your inbox to a local folder. To create a local folder:
  1. While in Eudora, go to the Mailbox menu and select New...
  2. Give a name to the new mailbox.
This mailbox will show up in your folders list under the icon labeled "Eudora Folder". Any messages you move to that folder will be removed from the server and only be available from that computer.
