Configuring Microsoft Outlook XP and 2003 to use IMAP
To configure Microsoft Outlook 2003 to use IMAP to check you OSU email account:
- Launch Outlook from the Programs menu.
- Start -> Program files -> Microsoft Office -> Microsoft Office Outlook 2003
- or
- Start -> All Programs -> Microsoft Office -> Microsoft Office Outlook 2003
- Open the email accounts wizard by selecting the Tools menu and E-mail Accounts.
- In the email account screen, under the E-mail heading select Add a new email account. Now choose Next.
- On the Server Types screen, select IMAP and choose Next.
- The "Internet E-mail Settings (IMAP)" screen asks for the following information:
- Your name : Your name as you would like it to appear on email messages (ex. John Doe).
- Email address : Your OSU email address (ex. lastname.#@osu.edu).
- Incoming mail server(IMAP) : imap.service.ohio-state.edu
- Outgoing mail server(SMTP) : smtp.service.ohio-state.edu
- User name should already be filled in with your OSU Internet Username (ex. lastname.#). If not, please fill that field in with your correct username.
- If desired, fill in the password field with the password for your OSU Internet Username (the same password used for OSU Webmail) and check the Remember Password box.
- Select the More settings button on the lower right side of the window.
- A window named "Internet Email Settings" should appear. Select the Advanced tab.
- On this tab, under the "Server Port Numbers" heading, you will see "Incoming server(IMAP)". Directly below this is a checkbox labeled "This server requires an encrypted connection(SSL). Place a check in this box. You may notice that the port number above changes from 143 to 993. This is to be expected. Choose OK to save this setting and close this window.
- Choose Next and Finish to complete the setup of this account.
- You will now see "imap.service.ohio-state.edu" on the left column of Outlook which contains the mailboxes for your new account.
