Adobe Acrobat Reader freezes or locks up on startup



Check the following folders for a large number of Acrxxxx.tmp files (where xxxx are random characters):

C:\Documents and Settings\username\Local Settings\Temp
...where username is your Windows username.*
C:\Windows\Temp

* To see the Local Settings folder, you may need to turn on the option to view hidden files and folders. To do this:

  1. When you open the "Documents and Settings" folder, go to the Tools Menu and select Folder Options...
  2. Click on the View tab.
  3. Select Show hidden files and folders.
  4. Click OK, then proceed to navigate to the folder described above.
Try deleting these files, then run Acrobat Reader again.

You should also upgrade to the latest version of Adobe Reader.
