Fixing Read-Only Documents in Microsoft Office X and 2004

Documents are marked as read-only in Microsoft Office X and 2004 when the owner of the document is set to somebody other than the person who's trying to edit it. To fix this problem, find the document on the hard drive, highlight it by clicking on it once and then select Get Info from the file menu.

Click on the triangle to the left of Ownership and Permissions: and then click on the triangle to the left of Details. If the Owner is not the same as the username of the user trying to edit the document, click on the Owner pop-up menu and select the user's name from the list of users. If the menu doesn't appear look at the lock icon to the right of the Owner field. If it appears to be locked then click on the lock icon, type in the password entered when doing software installation or system software upgrades and then select the correct username from the Owner pop-up menu. Close the information window and then open the file in Microsoft Office.
