Configuring Mozilla Thunderbird To Check OSU E-mail (Using IMAP)

Mozilla Thunderbird is a free e-mail client available for download from the Mozilla Foundation.

The first time you run Thunderbird, a wizard will appear and attempt to import information from your current e-mail program. This includes Preferences, Account Settings, Addressbooks, and e-mail. Thunderbird can only import this information from Netscape and Mozilla e-mail clients.

If you are not able to import your settings from your old e-mail client, you will need to choose "Don't import anything" and click Next. Thunderbird should then open up and start the "New Account Setup" wizard. The steps below will guide you through setting up your OSU e-mail account.

To access the wizard at a later date, select Tools and then Account Settings. Choosing "Add Account" will start the wizard.

  1. Choose "e-mail account," and click Next (or Continue if using a Macintosh).
  2. For "Your Name," enter your name as you would like it to be displayed on outgoing e-mails.
  3. For "e-mail address," enter your full OSU e-mail address in the format lastname.#@osu.edu. Click Next.
  4. Select the IMAP box.
  5. "Incoming Server" is: imap.service.ohio-state.edu
  6. "Outgoing Server" depends on your Internet Provider. If you are on campus or dialing up through Homenet/OSUWeb.Net then the outgoing server is: smtp.service.ohio-state.edu. If you are not on OSU's network, please see this list of outgoing servers
  7. Click Next.
  8. "Incoming User Name" should show your OSU Internet username (typically lastname.#).
  9. "Outgoing User Name" should show your OSU Internet username (typically lastname.#).
  10. Click Next.
  11. Click Next.
  12. Review the information on the last page. Click Finish when satisfied.

NOTE: You will not be able to check your e-mail until you complete a few more steps.

  1. If you are not in Account Settings, choose Tools and then Account Settings.
  2. Under the OSU Account, select "Server Settings." You will need to check the box next to "Use Secure Connection (SSL)" in order to check your e-mail.
  3. If you are using OSU's Outgoing (SMTP) server, select "Outgoing Server (SMTP)" in the left frame of Account Settings. Uncheck "Use name and password."
  4. Click OK to save your changes.

Mozilla Thunderbird should now be set up to check e-mail.

NOTE: For instructions on configuring Thunderbird to check OSU e-mail using POP connections instead of IMAP, see article 3108.
