Carmen: Create Downloadable PowerPoint Content [Instructor]

If you add a PowerPoint (.ppt) file as a topic, those using Internet Explorer may not be able to download the content because:

  • Versions of PowerPoint prior to 2003 open PowerPoint files in slide-show instead of edit mode when accessed via Internet Explorer (IE) and so there is no option to save the content.
  • Javascript code used in course links disables various functions in Internet Explorer, including Save As in the drop-down menu invoked by right-clicking file links.

The following instructions describe how to use Carmen's QuickLinks to create a topic using PowerPoint files that students will be able to download using Internet Explorer and other supported browsers.

  1. Log into Carmen and access your course as an instructor.
  2. Access the Content tool.
  3. From the main Course Content page, click Manage Files.
  4. Clickcontent upload icon in the toolbar at the top of the page to upload the PowerPoint file.
  5. From the main Course Content page, click Add Topic.
  6. In the New Topic dialog box that appears, click Create New File.
  7. The HTML Editor dialog box opens. Type any desired text, and click quick link icon to open the Insert QuickLinks dialog box.
  8. Select Course File from the drop-down menu next to Category.
  9. Click browse button and locate the PowerPoint file you uploaded.
  10. In the text box next to Link Caption, type a label for the link.
  11. Optional: For Open In, choose how the file should be opened (Whole Window, Same Frame (default), or New Window).
  12. Click insert button .
  13. In the HTML Editor dialog box, click save button .

Now when the topic is viewed, the student will be able to right-click the QuickLink and then select Save Target As... to download the PowerPoint slide.
