Carmen: Award Extra Credit [Instructor]
If you would like to give your students an opportunity to earn extra credit, you can create a column in your Gradebook that corresponds to the project. When adding or editing the grade item, simply check the Bonus box under Grading. Bonus item points are not added to the total possible points for the course. Any points earned for the grade item will be added to the student's total number of points earned. The way Carmen handles bonus items will depend on the grading system you have chosen in Grades Setup/Grade Calculations (Points or Weighted).
Points system:
When a grade item is designated as a bonus item using this calculation method, two things need to be specified:
- If the bonus item is to be applied to a category, select the category from the Parent Category drop-down menu.
- In the Points box, enter the number of bonus points that can be added to points earned for the course.
Weighted system:
When a grade item is designated as a bonus item using this calculation method, three things need to be specified:
- If the bonus item is to be applied to a category, you must select it from the Parent Category drop-down menu.
- In the Out Of box, enter the total possible points for the grade item.
- In the Weight box, enter the percent of the parent category to be used in calculating the total points assigned.
For example, suppose you have decided to allow 5 extra credit points and you want it to add up to 20% of a category that has 100 total points. The table below shows what percent of the parent category would be awarded to count toward the final grade:
| Bonus Points Earned | 1 | 2 | 3 | 4 | 5 |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Portion of Points in Category Awarded | 4% | 8% | 12% | 16% | 20% |
