Carmen: Audio and Video Content [Instructor]
If you would like to use audio or video files in your course content, you need two things:
- A file in the proper format so your students can hear or see it using a program like QuickTime, Real Player, Windows Media Player, etc.
- A place to store the file where it can be accessed from your course.
If you have a media file that exceeds 500 KB, or a group of files that exceeds 1 MB, you should convert the content to streaming format and place the file(s) on another server that supports streaming. Note: "Streaming" simply refers to a technique for transferring data (sound and pictures) over the Internet so that a client browser or plug-in can start displaying the content before the entire file has been received.
If you do not have the tools or expertise to produce streaming media yourself, the Office of Information Technology at OSU can help. Their staff can create audio or video media as well as host the files. Hosting is available at no cost for OSU faculty and staff. For more information, visit the Classroom Digital Media Distribution page.
