Mid-Ohio Library Digital Initative (Digital & Audio Books)
The Columbus Metropolitan Library, as well as several local libraries in the mid Ohio area, are making books available through electronic means (digital and audio) via the Mid Ohio Library Digital Initiative. There are a number of help documents available to assist in using their service including specific help for audio books and how to transfer books to a portable device such as a PDA (Personal Data Assistant) or some portable media players (digital music players). With the compression techniques used it is possible to compress an 8 hour audio book to fit in a 128 Meg player. Specific instructions are available for both Windows Media Player 9 or Windows Media Player 10. The media titles, provided by OverDrive, Inc., use DRM (Digital Rights Management) protection technology from Microsoft Corporation. You "check out" an electronic book or audio book in a similar fashion to normal books, except you don't have to return them. Instead the files you receive are protected in such a manner that the ability to access them expires after the check out date.
The Ohio State library has a similar offering for digital books via netLibrary, but do not yet offer audio books for check out.
