First scan your document and try to eliminate any formatting that will not display well on the web. Use the default font face and size (normally Times New Roman 12 pt.) to achieve the best results. Problematic elements and elements that might not display at all include:
- Headers and footers.
- Line breaks at the end of a line (use only when needed to force a line break).
- Page breaks.
- Special paragraph formatting (double spacing, indentation, etc.).
- Multiple spaces to indent a line (these will be treated as a single space).
- Tabs.
- Special characters.
- WordArt images created inside a Word document.
- Page numbers.
Microsoft Word/PowerPoint documents:
- Open the applicable document.
- From the File menu, click Save As.
Windows:- Select a location where the exported files will be saved. An empty, temporary folder is best due to the number of files that will be produced.
- Type a name in the File name box.
- Choose the Web Page (*.htm; *.html) option from the Save as type drop-down menu.
- Click
. The Publish as Web Page dialog box opens. - Under Browser Support, select the option Microsoft Internet 3.0, Netscape Navigator 3.0, or later.
- Click
. The Web Options dialog box opens. - Click the Files tab and then deselect (turn off) the option Organize supporting files in a folder.
- Click
and when the Publish as Web Page dialog box reappears, click
.

- Choose the Web Page option from the Format drop-down menu. A Save As dialog box appears.

. The Web Options dialog box opens. - Click the Files tab and check to see that all options under Browser Support are selected.

- A set of files is created with a main index file (e.g.,
.htm). An .xml document also is created, which you can ignore.
Note: Using the "Save as Web Page" option doubles the size of the resulting file which will increase the page load time. In addition, there are certain security issues related to metadata.
WordPerfect documents:
- Open the applicable document.
- Choose the Publish To/HTML option in the File menu and follow the prompts as they appear.
- When ready, click PUBLISH.
