Call Forwarding and Voice Mailboxes

OIT offers several call forwarding features to OSU Staff, Faculty, and Students. The most common are:

CFB Call Forward Busy Routes a call to another number if your line is busy (typically routed to 2-4141, the campus voice mail system)
CFD Call Forward Don't Answer Routes a call to another number if your line is not answered (typically routed to 2-4141, the campus voice mail system)
CFI Call Forward Intragroup Allows you to forward your campus phone to another 5-digit OSU extention
CFU Call Forward Universal Allows you to forward your campus phone to a number on or off campus

When call forwarding is enabled, it can often create unexpected results when voice mail is involved. Here a few possible scenarios:

  1. If phone A with voice mail is forwarded to phone B without voice mail...
...a call will NOT be routed to voice mail. The only chance that the call could go to voice mail is if phone B was forwarded to 2-4141 or a phone that had voice mail.

  2. If phone A without voice mail is forwarded to phone B with voice mail...
...a call will be routed to voice mail. However, since phone A does not have a voice mailbox, the "Welcome to the University's Voice Mail System" message will be heard, and the caller will have the option to enter a mailbox number at which to leave a message.

  3. If phone A with voice mail is forwarded to phone B with voice mail...
...a call will be routed to phone A's voice mailbox. This sometimes seems confusing since phone A was forwarded to phone B, and users often expect to receive messages on the phone B voice mailbox. This is not the case. Simply check the phone A voice mailbox.

For that last scenario, there are alternative mailbox options for receiving messages at phone B. One is "voice mailbox mapping" which simply tells the voice mail system to send the caller to a specific mailbox. Another option is an FCOS 30 mailbox, which is capable of moving the voice message to a mailbox of choice.

All questions and concerns regarding voice mail options should be directed to your Account Manager.
