OSU Wireless-Network: Setup for Windows XP
The following instructions apply to Windows XP Professional (running service pack 2) and Windows XP Home Edition.
NOTE: First, create an OSUWireless ID and PIN at the OIT Account Management site.
Configure the Wireless Network Connection on Your Laptop
- To configure the network, right click on the wireless connection in the system tray.
- Choose View Available Wireless Networks.
- From the left column of the "Wireless Network Connection" window, choose Change advanced settings.
- In the Wireless Network Connection Properties window that pops up, select the Wireless Networks tab.
- Check the box that says, Use Windows to configure my wireless network settings.
- In the "Preferred networks" section of the window, click the Add... button. This will begin the steps necessary to add the network.
- Click on the Association tab.
- Type osuwireless into the "Network name (SSID):" field.
- Select WPA from the Network Authentication pull down menu.
See this article if WPA is not an option. - Select TKIP from the Data Encryption pull down menu.
- Click on the Authentication tab.
- Choose PEAP from the "EAP type:" menu option.
- Press Properties.
- Verify the "Validate Server Certificate is checked.
- Uncheck "Connect to these Servers" selection.
- Under "Trusted Root Certificate Authorities", check the Equifax Secure Certificate Authority checkbox.
- Under "Select Authentication Method", make sure EAP-MSCHAPv2 is selected.
- Check the Enable Fast Reconnect checkbox.
- Press Configure.
- UNCHECK the Automatically use my Windows logon name and password (and domain if any) checkbox.
- Click Ok four (4) times to exit each of the wireless property boxes.
Your computer should now be configured to authenticate to the OSUWireless network.
What To Expect When You First Connect
When the computer is on and in range of an OSU Wireless Hot Spot, a balloon will pop up in the lower right corner of the screen.

- Click on the balloon.
A login screen will appear. - Enter your OSUWireless ID and PIN obtained from OIT Account Management site. You can leave the Logon domain blank.
You may be asked to accept a certificate the first time you connect. If so, the certificate will be issued by The Ohio State University.
