Carmen: Import a CSV into the Gradebook [Instructor]

The Gradebook allows any number of export options. Importing grades, however, can lead to frustration if you do not take a few precautions. To import grades into your Carmen course, follow the step-by-step guide in the Knowledge Base solution #2368, but be sure to create your CSV file with the following information at hand:

  1. It is best to start with an export of your class gradebook, and then make changes to this CSV file. Since all column titles must match exactly, it is easiest to start with the authoritative source for your column names.
  2. Microsoft Excel or any other suitable spreadsheet program will save files in CSV format. These programs will be easier to use than a simple text editor.
  3. The first column should be titled "StudentId" (exactly as typed), and the column should be left blank.
  4. The second column should be titled "Username", and this column should contain the lastname.# of your students.
  5. The final column must contain data. THe CSV will not import if the final titled column is blank at any point.
  6. The final result should look like this:

StudentId Username Assignment 1 Out Of Grade Quiz 1 Grade Symbol String
      zoetrope.1 5 Pass
      gravyboat.10 9 Fail
      football.3 10 Pass
      trolley.17 8 Pass
      robot.173 8 Pass

Keeping your CSV file in this format will prevent the import process from halting on two specific known errors. Please contact the Carmen Support Team at carmen@osu.edu for further assistance if you have any problems with this process.
