South Campus Gateway: Online Gaming Devices (Xbox, PS2|3, Wii)

Gamers attempting to utilize the available network in the South Campus Gateway apartments to get on online gaming comunities (such as Xbox Live), will be unable to connect by simply plugging in their gaming device into one of the ethernet outlets in their apartment.

Using the Internet service in the South Campus Gateway apartments requires you to first open a web browser and authenticate with an OSU Internet Username (lastname.#) and Password. Since most gaming devices (Xbox, PS2, etc.) do not have a built-in web browser, they will be unable to authenticate and will not be able to connect to their respective gaming community (i.e., XBox Live, etc.).

A Solution:
If you purchase a Network Address Translation (NAT) device, such as a linksys router, you can set up a "home network" that will allow a gaming device to use the network.

XBox in Gateway Setup
Figure 1

The setup shown in figure 1 depicts a possible solution to have both a computer and a gaming device, such as the XBox, connect to the South Campus Gateway network.

  1. Connect a NAT device (B) to the ethernet outlet (A) in your South Campus Gateway Apartment.
  2. Plug in your computer (C) and your gaming device (D) into the NAT device (B).
  3. Open up a web browser (i.e., Internet Explorer, Safari, etc.) on your computer (C).
You should be redirected to an authentication page.
Once you login, the NAT device will be authenticated, thus allowing ALL devices connected to it to utilize the network connection.

NOTE: Your gaming device will not be able to utilize the network (i.e., connect to a gaming community) unless you FIRST authenticate via a computer connected to the NAT device.

Choosing a NAT Device:
For the above mentioned setup, a simple multiple port router will suffice as long as it supports Network Address Translation (NAT). You can find a 4-port router at various computer retail and online stores that are fairly inexpensive.

Wireless Routers:
Setting up a personal wireless network is a violation of the signed lease between residents and South Campus Gateway. You are NOT permitted to set up a device, such as a wireless router, that broadcasts wireless network access.

Support:
The OIT Help Desk provides support for the network in South Campus Gateway apartments. However, technical support agents will not be able to assist you in configuring a NAT device. For this, you will want to contact the manufacturer of your device.
