Mytob virus spam purporting to be from @osu.edu addresses



E-mail is being sent to what appears to be random e-mail addresses @osu.edu claiming to be from authoritative IT addresses @osu.edu, such as webmaster@osu.edu and security@osu.edu.

The message contains a web address that directs people to a site with a copy of the Mytob virus that they can download and run. (Information about the Mytob virus is available from McAfee).

An example of the message follows:

Date: December 6, 2005 9:44:21 AM EST
To: ted@osu.edu
Subject: ACCOUNT ALERT

Dear Valued Member,

According to our terms of services, you will have to confirm your e- mail by the following link, or your account will be suspended within 24 hours for security reasons.

http://www.ted@osu.edu/confirm.php?account=osu.edu

After following the instructions in the sheet, your account will not be interrupted and will continue as normal.

Thanks for your attention to this request. We apologize for any inconvenience.
