Carmen: Cannot View HTML Pages Created in Word
Using Save as Webpage in MS Word or copying/pasting text may result in unviewable pages in Carmen. If you experience a problem with HTML content created in Word, try the following:
1. Make sure to save your file as an html file (.htm or .html) and not as a .mht file:
MS Word has the ability to save files as .mht or .htm webpages. Because the .mht type is not supported by all browsers, be sure the type is correct. To save as .htm:
- Open the original Word document.
- Choose Save As from the File menu.
- In the Save as type drop-down menu, select Web Page.
- Choose Save.
- Upload the new file to Carmen, and recreate the link from content to point to the new file.
Differences between browsers and versions of Word can affect the success of this solution. If the file still is not viewable within Carmen, try one of the next three options.
2. Copy/Paste into the built-in html editor:
Another method of cleaning the HTML code involves copying the formatted text (not HTML) from Word and pasting it into the design view of Carmen's HTML editor. To try this solution:
- Open the original Word file (the .doc file), and select all of the text by holding CTRL+A (Command+A on a Mac). Choose Edit and then Copy.
- From the Content page in Carmen, click
and
select Create New File. - After giving the new file a Title and Short Title, click in the main entry window and paste the text by holding CTRL+V (Command+V on a Mac).
- The text should appear much as it was formatted within Word. Click Save to save the new page within Carmen.
- If the text formatting is not copied, try a different browser, or Options 3 and 4.
Note this is not a recommended solution, as differences between browsers and versions of Word can affect its success. It is a known issue that copying and pasting material from a Word document into the HTML editor can trigger an XML error when displaying the item. Native Word documents contain extraneous code and XML tags that may be copied and pasted along with the desired text.
3. Copy/Paste Word HTML text into the editor:
To avoid the XML errors when pasting Word text into the HTML editor, save the document as HTML within Word and then copy and paste into Carmen's HTML editor. This usually preserves most aspects of the document format and will avoid pasting the XML tags into the HTML editor.
- Open the original Word document.
- Choose Save As in the File menu.
- In the Save as type drop-down menu, select Web Page.
- Choose Save.
- Select all of the text (of the now HTML document) within Word by holding CTRL+A (Command+A on a Mac). Choose Edit and then Copy.
- In the content tool of Learn@UW, click Add Topic and select Create New File.
- After giving the new file a Title and Short Title, click in the main entry window and paste the text in by holding Control and V (Command and V on a Mac).
- The text should appear much as it was formatted within Word. Click Save to save the new page within Carmen.
- If the text formatting is not copied, try option 4.
4. Clean up Word's HTML code:
Macromedia Dreamweaver has the capability to clean up Word's formatting. If you are working with an HTML file that you created in Word and you have a copy of Dreamweaver, try this option.
- Open the Word HTML file in Dreamweaver (as created using option 1 or 3).
- Choose Clean Up Word HTML from the Commands menu.
- Verify all boxes are checked and click OK.
- Save the file in Dreamweaver and then upload to Carmen. The content link should work as long as you do not change the filename or location when you upload the new file.
