Carmen: RealPlayer causes Browser to Crash

Some people are reporting that RealPlayer crashes their computer when they log in to Carmen (or while they're in the middle of using Carmen).

A quick work-around is to use another computer such as one of the Student Computing Centers on campus. See the SCC web site for a list of locations and hours.

The problem that arises is a combination of these three factors:

  1. RealPlayer is installed on a Windows XP machine.
  2. RealPlayer is set to be your default player of ".wav" files.
  3. You have an incoming PAGE that is waiting for you when you log in to My Home (or else it arrives while you are online).

The fix is to take away from RealPlayer the default right to play ".wav" files:

  1. Launch RealPlayer, go to the Tools pull-down menu, to Preferences, and select Content.
  2. From the menu at left, select "Media Types".
  3. Under "Universal Media Player," change setting to "Manually configure media types for RealPlayer"
  4. Click SELECT button
  5. Scroll until you see ".wav"
  6. In the third major section -- "WAV" -- uncheck WAV Audio (.wav)
  7. Click OK

Optionally, you can DESELECT all types and then only add the RealVideo and RealAudio types ... leaving others to be run by Windows Media Player or QuickTime or other applications.
