Carmen: Troubleshooting Internet Explorer Settings



Internet Explorer is the best choice of browser for PC users wishing to access Carmen, but problems can occur if Internet Explorer is set up incorrectly. The first step towards full compatibility is to make https://carmen.osu.edu a "Trusted Site" in the Internet Options of your browser.

To do this, just follow these step-by-step directions:

  • In your browser Window, click on the "Tools" menu, and select "Internet Options..."
  • Select the "Security" tab, and click on the icon labeled "Trusted Sites" (1)
  • Click on the "Sites..." button (2)
  • In the text box titled "Add this web site to the zone", type https://carmen.osu.edu, and click on the "Add" button (3)
  • Click "OK"

Establishment of Carmen as a trusted site will settle any number of problems, but just in case this does not work, be sure to verify the following five things:

  • Security settings should be set to Medium or lower. See how...
  • Privacy settings should be set to Medium or lower. See how...
  • IE’s built in pop-up blocker should also be disabled. See how...
  • Cookie handling must be enabled; this will correct itself if you have Carmen as a Trusted Site
  • Browser cache settings must be set to "Every visit to the page". See how...

If you verify that these five settings are correct, and you are still having problems logging into Carmen, then your problems may be with third-party software such as a pop-up blocker or an add-on toolbar. Please see this article for more information on this topic.

To check your Security settings in the "Internet Options..." window:

  1. Select the "Security" tab, select the "Trusted Sites" icon, and click on the "Custom Level..." button.
  2. In the "Reset custom settings" drop-down list, make sure the "Reset to:" field is at Medium or lower. If it was set at a higher level, just select Meduim, and click on the "Reset" button.
  3. Click "OK"

Privacy settings and the IE Pop-up Blocker can be checked together. In the "Internet Options..." window:

  • Select the "Privacy" tab, and make sure the slider is set to "Medium" or lower
  • If the Internet Explorer Pop-up Blocker is the only Pop-up manager you use:
    1. Do NOT remove the check mark in the "Block pop-ups" checkbox
    2. Instead, click on the "Settings..." button next to the checkbox
    3. In the text box titled "Address of Web site to allow:", type https://carmen.osu.edu, and click on the "Add" button
    4. Click on the "Close" button
  • Otherwise, just uncheck the "Block pop-ups" checkbox

Browser Cache settings can be checked in the "Internet Options..." window":

  1. Select the "General" tab, then click on the "Settings.." button
  2. Under "Check for newer versions of stored pages:", make sure that "Every visit to the page" is selected
  3. Click "OK"
