Descriptions of the Anti-Spam Service Simplified Interface settings

None of these methods take advantage of the Spam Trap, or any whitelisting or blacklisting features that are available in the Expert Interface, and may be further utilized by Training the filter

This is a sample picture of the Interface. The real interface may be found by logging in at http://antispam.osu.edu

Simplified Interface

  • I want to Opt out of the Anti Spam system - NOT RECOMMENDED
    • This option will scan for trojans and viruses as well as e-mail on the Real Time Block List only.
    • There is no Bayesian or Roaring Penguin scanning at this leve.

  • I want my email scanned and delivered to me, with a spam score in the subject and header line
    • All e-mail will be scanned for viruses and trojans. Any found will be discarded.
    • E-mail will have a score in the headers. Headers may be scanned by e-mail clients like Eudora, Outlook, and Thunderbird (can not be scanned in Outlook Express)
    • E-mail will have a score in the subject line. All major e-mail clients have the ability to filter by subject line
    • Does affect the subject line and the spam score may be sent back on a reply.

  • I want my email scanned and delivered to me, with a spam score in the header line only
    • All e-mail will be scanned for viruses and trojans. Any found will be discarded
    • E-mail will have a score in the headers. Headers may be scanned by e-mail clients like Eudora, Outlook, and Thunderbird (can not be scanned in Outlook Express)
    • Least intrusive of all of the methods.

  • I want my email scanned at a LOW setting with 30% of the email that is most likely spam will be auto-rejected and not delivered
    • Any e-mail with a spam score of 20.5 or higher is discarded

  • I want my email scanned at a MEDIUM setting with 50% of the email that is most likely spam will be auto-rejected and not delivered
    • Any e-mail with a spam score of 6.2 or higher is discarded

  • I want my email scanned at a HIGH setting with 90% of the email that is most likely spam will be auto-rejected and not delivered
    • Any e-mail with a spam score of 6.5 or higher is discarded

The Spam Score is determined by scanning the e-mail and looking for tendencies that spammers use. The higher the score, the more likely e-mail is spam.

Though the HIGH setting uses the higher number, there are additional rules called Bayesian filters, which could potentially bring an initially lower scoring message higher. The HIGH setting uses more stringent Bayesian filters than Medium.

For more information about the filtering levels, and the Bayesian filter settings, please check the Article: Obtain the Benefits of Low, Medium, and High in Anti-Spam while continuing to use Advanced Features
