Configuring Windows Mail (in Vista) To Check OSU E-mail
Microsoft Windows Mail (in Vista) is based on Outlook Express and has much the same look. Some additional spam and phishing tools have been added to assist with those issues.
- Startup Mail from the Start button and click on Microsoft Mail. The first time it starts it will ask for your name, and the Pop and smtp server and your e-mail address. Skip to step 3 if you are using the wizard to configure. Otherwise click on the Tools menu, and then choose Accounts.
- For "Display Name," enter your name (Firstname, Middle name or initial, and Lastname). Click Next.
- For "Email Address," enter your OSU e-mail address (lastname.#@osu.edu), then click Next.
- Under "Set up e-mail servers page pull down and select POP3. For "Incoming Mail (POP3 or IMAP) server," type pop.service.ohio-state.edu and for "Outgoing Mail (SMTP) server," type smtp.service.ohio-state.edu (or smtp.resnet.ohio-state.edu if you connect from the dorms) and then click Next.
***NOTE: If you do not connect to the internet through OSU, you will need to use your ISP's outgoing mail server. See the following page for details: http://oit.osu.edu/networking/openrelay/
- In the next window, in the "Internet Mail Logon" screen to the right of "E-mail Username" enter your username (lastname.#). You can enter your password next to "Password" and check "Remember Password" checkbox if you want to save your password so you do not have to enter it every time you check your mail. Click Next.
- Click Finish button to return to accounts menu.
- Highlight the new account that shows up as pop.service.ohio-state.edu
- Click on Properties button.
- If your ISP requires outgoing SMTP authentication check the "My server requires authentication" checkbox and click on the settings button to provide userid and password. OSU's SMTP server does not require authentication since only OSU IP addresses can access it.
- If you wish to leave mail on the server click on the Advance Tab and click on the "leave a copy of messages on server" box. If this is not checked when you check mail all the mail on our server will be downloaded to your Vista computer. You can also choose how long you wish the mail to stay on the server and if you want to delete from the server if you select delete from the "deleted items".
- Click OK to return to the accounts menu.
- Click Close to exit the Internet Accounts window.
- To check your OSU Email, just click on the Send/Receive button in the tools menu.
