To boot from the System CD on most newer Macintoshes, you can simply insert the System CD, restart the computer, then hold down the "C" key on the keyboard after you hear the startup chime.

To be able to choose the startup partition hold down the Option key on startup and choose which disk or partition to boot from.

Otherwise, you can use one of the following methods:

Mac OS X*

  • Go to the System Preferences Application and click on the Startup Disk icon.
  • Click on the System with the CD icon, then close System Preferences, save the changes and restart.
Mac OS 9*
  • Insert the System CD.
  • Go to the Apple Menu, then Control Panels.
  • Open the "Startup disk" control panel.
  • Select the System CD icon and close the control panel.
  • Go to the special menu and select Restart.
*These instructions will also work for booting off another hard drive or external device with a valid OS.

If you have an older Macintosh that has a Disk Tools floppy disk.
  • Go to the Special Menu.
  • Choose Restart.
  • Insert the disk tools disk immediately after the computer restarts. The computer will startup off of the disk.
