Configuration Settings for OIT Mail, DNS, News, and Dial-up



This article contains the settings and server addresses needed to configure most e-mail, network and news software to access OIT's central Internet services, including the HomeNet dial-up service.

E-mail Servers & Settings

OSU Webmail Address: webmail.osu.edu

Your OSU Internet Username: (usually name.#)
Return Address: name.#@osu.edu
The POP3 (incoming) mail server: pop.service.ohio-state.edu
The SMTP (outgoing) mail server***: smtp.service.ohio-state.edu

***NOTE: If you connect to the Internet from an OSU Residence Hall, use smtp.resnet.ohio-state.edu. If you do not connect to the Internet through OSU, you will need to use your ISP's outgoing mail server or establish a VPN connection before sending. See this page for details.

Some versions of Eudora ask for a Pop Account. Use the format name.n@pop.service.ohio-state.edu


Other OIT Server Addresses

News server: nntp.service.ohio-state.edu
Directory Server: directory.service.ohio-state.edu
Domain Name Servers: 128.146.48.7 and 128.146.1.7
Network Time Servers: ntp1.service.ohio-state.edu and ntp2.service.ohio-state.edu

HomeNet Dial-Up Settings

Short Term Phone Number: 614-722-9800
Long Term Phone Number: 614-722-9900

For any of the Internet applications to work, the Domain Name Servers listed above need to be entered in the appropriate location. (In Windows 95/98, open the Network Control Panel, go to the TCP/IP Properties, and select the DNS Configuration tab. On a computer running the MacOS, go to the TCP/IP control panel.)
