Accessing OSU News Groups From Computer Not On The OSU Network
The OIT news server (nntp.service.ohio-state.edu) supports user authentication from any computer with Internet access located on or off campus. This means you can connect directly to OSU's news server through any Internet Service Provider simply by entering your OSU Internet username in the setup of your newsreading software.
These instructions are specifcally for configuring a news reader to use your OSU Internet username and password for off-campus access. Please call 688-HELP or send e-mail to 8help@osu.edu if you need additional assistance.
WINDOWS:
- Trumpet Newsreader:
Go to the File pull-down menu and choose Setup, then enter your OSU Internet username for "NNTP Username" and your password for "Password." Trumpet requires entering the password at this point.
- Free Agent:
Go to the Options pull-down menu and choose General Preferences, then click on the "User" tab. Check the box for "Server requires authorization login" and enter your OSU Internet username for "User Name." You will enter your password when you are prompted for it when you open a connection.
- Microsoft Internet News (Outlook Express):
Go to the Tools pull-down menu and choose Accounts, then select or add nntp.service.ohio-state.edu. Click on "Properties," then click on the "Server" tab. Check the box for "This server requires me to log on," and enter your OSU Internet username for "Account Name." You will enter your password when you are prompted for it when you open a connection.
MACINTOSH:
- Newswatcher:
Go to the File pull-down menu and choose Preferences, then click on "Authentication." Enter your OSU Internet username for "Username:" Check either the box for "authenticate only when requested" or "always authenticate." You will enter your password when you are prompted for it when you open a connection.
- Microsoft Internet Mail and News:
Go to the Edit pull-down menu and choose Preferences, then click on "News Server." Check the box for "This Server requires authentication" and enter your OSU Internet username. You will enter your password when you are prompted for it when you open a connection.
