How do I make my list moderated/unmoderated?
When a list is moderated, all messages posted by non owners go to the moderators for approval. Once the moderators approve the message, it is posted through the list to everyone subscribed.
There are two types of moderated lists: moderated-edit and moderated-no-edit. A list configured to moderated-edit allows the list owner to make changes to a post before sending the message to the list subscribers. When a moderator is ready to approve a message he or she forwards the message back to the list address and the message is then posted to all the subscribers on the list. Messages on a moderated-edit list appear to be "From" the list's moderator but they also acknowledge the original authors in the body of the messages.
A list set to moderated-no-edit will still send messages to the moderators for approval, but instead of forwarding the entire message the moderator sends an approval code for each message that he or she wants to go to the list. Moderators of a moderated-no-edit list do not have the option of making changes to a message before approving it.
Unmoderated lists have no moderators. Messages posted to an unmoderated list are immediately distributed to all of the list's subscribers.
In order to change the moderated/unmoderated settings on a list, a list owner should send e-mail to:
listproc@lists.acs.ohio-state.edu
with no subject and in the body of the message put:
conf listname listpassword moderated-edit
OR
conf listname listpassword moderated-no-edit
OR
conf listname listpassword unmoderated
--where listname and listpassword should be replaced with the correct information for your list.
This change can also be made from the Mailing List Server Interface page, by filling out the listname, list password, and owner e-mail address, then clicking on "Change List Settings".
