Cannot find wsock32.dll

This error usually occurs when the the wsock32.dll file gets accidently removed while attempting to remove some older viruses. A re-install of Dial-Up Networking will not work. To re-add the file you have to reinstall it from the Windows CD.

For Windows 95 users:
  1. Make sure that your Windows 95 CD is in the drive, then go to the Start menu, and select Run.
  2. Next type in the following line (be certain to replace "x" with the drive letter of your CD-ROM drive and replace "z" with the drive letter of your hard drive):

    extract /a x:\Win95_02.cab Wsock32.dll /I z:\Windows\System

  3. Finally, restart the computer.
For Windows 98 users:
  1. Make sure your Windows 98 CD is in the drive, then go to the Start menu and select Run.
  2. Type in sfc and hit Enter. This will bring up the System File Checker.

  3. Select the option "Extract one file from installation disk."
  4. Type in Wsock32.dll where it asks for the name of the system file you want to restore.

  5. Click on the Start button. This will bring up an Extract File window.

  6. Type in the letter of your CD-ROM drive win98 (for example d:\win98). Then hit Start. It should find the file and install it. If it asks you for the name of the cab file however, type in precopy2.cab .
  7. Finally, restart the computer.
