Setting up and working with LISTSERV ARCHIVES
It is possible to set up listserves to archive messages. By default lists are *not* set up for archiving, so the first thing that needs to be done is the owner must tell the listprocessor to begin archiving messages sent to the list. To do this the list owner can send e-mail to:
listproc@lists.acs.ohio-state.edu
with no subject, and in the body of the message put:
conf listname listpassword archive
--where the listname and listpassword should be replaced with the correct information for the list. This command will have the listproc begin archiving messages sent to the list.
To view the contents of a particular list's archive, the owners and subscribers of that list can send e-mail to:
listproc@lists.acs.ohio-state.edu
with no subject, and in the body of the message put:
index listname
--where listname is the name of the list. By default list archives are stored under the list's name. The index looks something like this:
log9801 (1 part, 19509 bytes) -- Test
log9803 (1 part, 2063 bytes) -- TEST1
log9804 (1 part, 1918 bytes) -- Fwd: TESTING MODERATION
log9805 (1 part, 4808 bytes) -- TEST
log9806 (1 part, 1139 bytes) -- TEST
log9807 (1 part, 2023 bytes) -- What? How'd you know?
etc...
To get one of these messages from the archive, send mail to the listproc address with no subject and in the body put:
get listname logname
--where listname is the name of the list and logname is the name of the log to be downloaded. So "get listname log9807" for example, would send the contents of the "What? How'd you know?" log.
To search archived postings, list owners and list subscribers can send a message to the listproc e-mail address again, with no subject, and this time in the body of the message include:
search listname "stuff"
--where stuff is the text you want to search for. It does need to have the "" quotes around it. For example, to search the mylist archive for any mention of the word foo, send e-mail to the listproc address with no subject, and in the body of the message put:
search mylist "foo"
--and the listproc would return a message quoting every line in the archives which contain the word foo. It only quotes that line and the log it comes from - to see the whole message use the GET command to get that particular log.
See also the listproc's HELP files on these commands. Send e-mail to the listproc@lists.acs.ohio-state.edu address with no subject and in the body of the message put:
help index
help get
help search
