Configuring Outlook/Outlook Express to use OSU's Directory Services (LDAP)
Once you've configured Outlook or Outlook Express to use Directory Services, To do a search, go to the Tools menu and choose Address Book. Click on the Find People button.
For "Look in", make sure it has directory.service.ohio-state.edu. Type the name you're looking for in the name field. You do not put a period between first and last names.
To configure Outlook 2007 to use OSU's Directory Services:
- Go to the Tools pull-down menu to Account Settings.
- Go to the "Address Books" tab.
- Choose 'Internet Directory Service (LDAP)' and click Next.
- Under 'Server Name' type: directory.service.ohio-state.edu. Leave the 'Logon Information' section unchecked and blank.
- Click the More Settings button, go to the "Search" tab, and in the "Search Base" section, select "Custom" and in that blank type:
ou=People, dc=osu, dc=edu
- Click OK to close the "Microsoft LDAP Directory" window, then click Next.
- Hit Finish to close the window.
Starting in Outlook 2002 in Office XP, there is a wizard for configuring account and directory service entries, and the instructions are slightly changed:
- Go to the Tools pull-down menu and choose E-mail Accounts.
- Under "Directory", choose 'Add a new directory or address book' and then click Next.
- Choose 'Internet Directory Service (LDAP)' and click Next.
- Under 'Server Name' type: directory.service.ohio-state.edu. Leave the 'Logon Information' section unchecked and blank.
- Click the More Settings button, go to the "Search" tab, and in the "Search Base" field, type:
ou=People, dc=osu, dc=edu
- Click OK to close the "Microsoft LDAP Directory" window, then click Next.
- Hit Finish to close the window.
Note: If you've followed the above instructions for configuring Outlook 2002 to access the LDAP directory and are still getting errors such as the ones described in this Microsoft knowledge base article, then you may need to download and install the latest service pack for Office XP.
To configure a Directory Service in Outlook Express of older versions (pre-2002) of Outlook for OSU's Directory Services (LDAP):
- Go to the Tools pull-down menu and choose Accounts.
- From the window that opens, click the Add button and select Directory Service.
- Follow the instructions in the Internet Connection Wizard that opens. For the Internet directory (LDAP) server type: directory.service.ohio-state.edu . When prompted if you want to check addresses using this directory serivce, choose no.
- Once the Directory Service has been created, in the Accounts window, highlight the new entry for ldap.osu.edu and hit the Properties button to the right.
- Under the "Advanced" tab, in the "Search Base" window, type:
ou=People, dc=osu, dc=edu
(under some versions of Outlook/Outlook Express you may need to leave the search base blank.)
- Once configured, hit the OK button to close the Properties and Accounts windows.
