Adding Large Numbers of Subscribers to a Listserv Using .CSV Files
It is possible for list owners to add large numbers of subscribers to a listserv using a .CSV file. A .CSV (comma separated volume) file is a text file that can be created from most spread sheet programs (such as Microsoft Excel) or with a simple text editor.
The file should have the format shown on the List Owner's Management Tool web page:
Firstname Lastname,e-mail address
For example:
Brutus Buckeye,buckeye.1@osu.edu
OIT HelpDesk,8help@osu.edu
The name field must not contain any commas, and there should not be quotation marks around the fields when looking at the CSV file.
Once that file is created, go to the List Owner's Management Tool site, fill out the list name/password and owner address and hit the "Add Subscribers To List" button. At the bottom of that page there is a browse button and an upload button. Click "browse" to select your file, and then choose "upload". The listprocessor will mail the owner address with a confirmation when the command is successfully processed.
It is also possible to use a .CSV file for mass deletes. The file format and procedures are the same, and the field for doing this is located at the bottom of the "Remove Subscribers From List" page.
Note: If using Microsoft Excel (the preferred method of creating .CSV files), it is important to remember that names go into the first column (Column A) and e-mail addresses go into the second column (Column B). There should only be 2 columns with information in this .CSV file.
