Carmen: Firefox does not display Equations [Users]

The Equation Editor is a tool designed to build complex mathematical structures quickly and efficiently, but it relies on a set of mathematical fonts that are not native to a clean installation of Firefox. If you are experiencing problems with equations or the equation editor in Firefox, the problem may be due to these missing fonts.

To resolve this problem, follow these easy steps:

  1. Look at this test page to see if your browser has the full compliment of required fonts installed.
  2. If the utility determines that some required fonts are missing, it will announce this with a pop-up alert like this:

    Missing MathML Font Alert

  3. Close the alert window, and look at the web page underneath. You should see a link in the upper-right corner, as shown below:

    MathML Font Links

  4. The link will take you to this page: http://www.mozilla.org/projects/mathml/fonts/ . From here, you can choose the installer that matches your operating system. Look to the sidebar on the right-hand side to find the download links, as shown in the following image:

    MathML Font Installer

  5. Do not forget to consult the installation instructions:

  6. If this does not work, or if the test page does not find any problem with the font set, then the problem lies with the original HTML document. There document in question likely contains one or more metatags that specifies a conflicting font set. These tags should be removed from the document. Note: FrontPage is one source of these metatags - users should not use FrontPage in conjunction with mathematical equations in Carmen.
