Attachments sent using Outlook 2000/2003 converted to Winmail.dat files

Problem: A user receives an attachment from someone using Outlook 2000 and it has been converted to a Winmail.dat file.

Solution: The problem is that Outlook is sending the message in Rich Text Format, which uses the winmail.dat file to preserve the formatting of the message. Usually the winmail.dat file is separate from any attachments sent, but sometimes the two can be combined into one large winmail.dat attachment. Usually this problem occurs when the recipient's email program cannot handle Rich Text Formatted messages. To fix this, do the following:

  1. Startup Outlook 2000 or 2003, go to the Tools menu, and select Options. This must be done from the main Outlook screen, not after opening the e-mail. The tools options menu is different when done from within a mail message.
  2. Click on the "Mail Format" tab.
  3. Select "Plain Text" from the message format menu, then click OK.
Note: In Vista Windows Mail it will appear as no attachment was sent. Winmail.dat attachments will not show up as an attachment to the e-mail.
