Configuring Outlook Express (Macintosh) to check Email
- Startup Outlook Express
- If the "Outlook Express Setup Assistant" is displayed, skip to Section 2 below. Otherwise continue on with the next step.
- Go to the Tools menu and select Accounts (OE 4.x: Go to Edit, click Preferences, then E-mail)
- If there is an account there (and you are not using it), double click it. If there isn't an account there, click New and go to step 2 of Section 2 below. Otherwise, continue on with the next step.
- In the window that comes up, enter the following information:
Account Name: "My OSU Mail" (or whatever you would like to call it)
Name: First and last name
E-mail Address: lastname.#@osu.edu
Account ID: lastname.# (all lowercase)
POP Server: pop.service.ohio-state.edu
Your Password: (this is optional)
SMTP Server***: smtp.service.ohio-state.edu (or smtp.resnet.ohio-state.edu if you connect from the dorms)***NOTE: If you do not connect to the internet through OSU, you will need to use your ISP's outgoing mail server. See the following page for details: http://oit.osu.edu/networking/openrelay/
Then click OK and close the Accounts window. - Outlook Express is now setup to check your OSU email. To do so, click the Send and Receive button in the Toolbar.
Section 2 - Using the Outlook Express Setup Assistant
- Select the middle option ("I already have an Internet e-mail account....") and click the right arrow.
- Enter your first and last name and click the right arrow.
- Select "I already have an e-mail address that I'd like to use" and enter your OSU email address (lastname.#@osu.edu) and click the right arrow.
- Enter the following information:
My incoming mail server is a POP server.
Incoming mail (POP,IMAP) server: pop.service.ohio-state.edu
Outgoing (SMTP) mail server***: smtp.service.ohio-state.edu (or smtp.resnet.ohio-state.edu if you connect from the dorms)***NOTE: If you do not connect to the internet through OSU, you will need to use your ISP's outgoing mail server. See the following page for details: http://oit.osu.edu/networking/openrelay/
Then click the right arrow.
- For "Account ID," enter you OSU username (lastname.# - all lowercase) and enter your OSU password if you would like Outlook Express to save it. Then click the right arrow.
- Enter the Account Name (ex: "My OSU Email") and click Finish
- Outlook Express is now setup to check your OSU email. To do so, click the Send and Receive button in the Toolbar.
