Virus Alert: W32/Hybris.gen@MM
W32/Hybris.gen@MM spreads by e-mail as an attachment. The message may include the text "Snow White and the Seven Dwarves" and the attachment may appear with many different names, most of which are either .exe or .scr files. The message will sometimes display a "From" address similar to "sexyfun@haha.com".
Once a computer is infected, the virus attempts to connect to the newsgroup alt.comp.virus and uploads copies of itself, then looks for newer versions and "plugins" for itself. There are many different plugins circulating for the virus and they have different effects. The most common variant places a large black spiral or dot over the windows 9x desktop preventing the use of windows. The dot cannot be removed using the Close Program dialog box, but is not present in safe mode.
A full write-up on the virus, including manual removal instrucitons, is available from the McAfee Virus Information Library.
There is a fix for this virus available at the Symantec website.
