Computer Virus Alert: W32.Naked@mm or NakedWife.exe
Virus Alert: W32.Naked@mm or NakedWife.exe
Web sites that track computer viruses are reporting incidences of a new virus called W32.Naked@mm or NakedWife.exe . It is a .vbs file and very destructive. If the virus executes on your computer, it deletes all files in the Windows and Windows/System folder with the extensions: .ini, .log, .dll, .exe, .com, and .bmp. It also replicates itself to all the entries in your Microsoft Outlook address book. There is no way to clean it or disinfect your computer because it deletes most important files, necessitating that you reinstall Windows.
The Technology Support Center has not received any reports that it has struck Ohio State as of Wednesday morning, but if it does hit, it could cause additional problems by delaying e-mail delivery on campus. OIT recommends that you take preventative action by installing the latest VirusScan DAT file to protect your computer, available from OSU SLS at the following web page:

You can further protect yourself from .vbs script viruses by turning off the Windows Scripting Host (WSH) on your Windows 98 system if you don't normally use the scripting language function (ask your departmental computing support staff if this will impact any department-specific software you may be running). To turn off scripting, go to Control Panels , choose Add//Remove Programs , then choose Windows Set-up . Double-click on Accessories , then scroll to the bottom of the list and uncheck Windows Scripting Host .
