Configuring An iPhone To Check OSU E-mail
To configure your iPhone to check OSU e-mail:
- Click on the Settings icon.
- Click on the Mail icon.
- Click on Add Account...
- Click on Other.
- Click on the POP button. (The options are IMAP, POP and Exchange.)
- In the "Name" field, enter your name.
- In the "Address" field, enter your e-mail address, in the form lastname.#@osu.edu .
- Click on the "Description" field. The contents of the "Address" field will be copied to the "Description" field, but the contents of this field can be whatever you want. A good choice would be something like OSU E-mail.
- For the Incoming Mail Server the "Host Name" should be pop.service.ohio-state.edu .
- For the Incoming Mail Server the "User Name" should be your OSU Internet username. (Typically in the format lastname.#)
- For the Incoming Mail Server the "Password" should be the password for your OSU Internet username -- the same password used for logging in to OSU Webmail, Carmen, BuckeyeLink and other online services.
- For the Outgoing Mail Server the "Host Name" should be smtp.service.ohio-state.edu (***).
- For the Outgoing Mail Server the "User Name" should be blank.
- For the Outgoing Mail Server the "Password" should be blank.
Click on the Save button at the top of the window. The iPhone will check the e-mail information and verify that it's been entered correctly. After the e-mail information had be verified and saved click on the Home button at the bottom of the screen.
***Note: At the present time OSU does not provide authenticated SMTP services. For users this means that they cannot use the OSU SMTP server to send e-mail to non-OSU e-mail addresses when not using the OSU network. The iPhone/iPod Touch 2.0 software added the ability to connect to OSUWireless, so when on campus that can be used. AT&T's EDGE network is outside the OSU network, however, so iPhone users not on OSUWireless would be limited to sending e-mail to other OSU e-mail addresses when using their OSU e-mail account. The only workarounds at this point would be to either use another e-mail service provider's SMTP server if they permit it or to just use another e-mail account for sending mail.
