Starting Windows XP in Safe Mode
To start a computer running Windows XP in Safe Mode:
- While the computer is booting, repeatedly press the F8 key. It can be a little tricky -- you must press the F8 key at exactly the right point in the boot sequence. If the computer enters the normal Windows boot process, just wait until it's done, reboot, and try again. The computer may "beep" while you are repeatedly pressing the F8 key, but this can be safely ignored.
- When you have timed the pressing of the F8 correctly, you will see a Windows Boot Menu, with a variety of startup options. Use the arrow keys to select "Safe Mode," then press enter.
- In the next screen, you will be asked to select an operating system to boot. (Probably there will be only one choice, Windows XP Professional.) Use the arrow keys to select the correct operating system, and press Enter.
- When Windows XP is booted in Safe Mode, it will say "Safe Mode" in all four corners of the screen. When you are finished troubleshooting in Safe Mode, reboot to return to Windows' normal mode.
