Problem: Windows XP Continually Rebooting

Windows XP can be set to automatically restart when it has crashed, i.e., in those situations that cause a Blue Screen of Death.

This can cause problems if the crash occurs during the boot process. If a user is affected by this problem, his/her computer will continually reboot, display the Blue Screen of Death, then reboot again.

To correct this problem so that you can begin troubleshooting the cause of the crashes, follow these steps:

  1. Boot into Safe Mode.
  2. When the computer has booted into Safe Mode, right-click My Computer and click the Advanced tab.
  3. Under Startup and Recovery, click the Settings button.
  4. Under System Failure, clear the check box next to "Automatically Restart," then click OK.
This is also an option in the Windows Boot menu. You can select "Disable automatic restart on system failure" after reaching the Windows boot menu.
