Resnet Router and ME/XP UPnP Incompatibility
Universal Plug and Play (UPNP) allows Windows ME and Windows XP computers to discover and control Universal Plug and Play devices on your home network.
Windows ME and Windows XP can detect existing Universal Plug and Play devices on your home network, and new devices when they are added. In both cases, a notification is displayed next to the clock on your taskbar to alert you when devices are detected. Universal Plug and Play devices are displayed in the My Network Places folder on your desktop. You can control the devices by double-clicking on the icon, or you can view device properties by right-clicking on the icon and selecting Properties from the list of options that appears.
UPNP needs to be turned off if you are connected to the ResNet network in the OSU Residence Halls. If left on, this can cause Windows ME and XP machines to crash.
To disable UPNP:
In Windows ME, from the Start Button, go into Control Panels, Add/Remove Programs, and click on the "Windows Setup Tab". Double-click on the "Communications" option, and uncheck "Universal Plug and Play".
In Windows XP, from the Start Button, go into Control Panels, Add/Remove programs, and click on Add/Remove Windows Components. Scroll down to Networking Services, and uncheck "Universal Plug and Play".
