Status of HomeNet dial-in Service
As noted in OSUToday
HOMENET TO CONTINUE AT REDUCED SERVICE LEVEL
-- Because of reduced funding, declining use and outdated equipment, the complimentary HomeNet dial-in service will be operating at a reduced level effective July 1, 2002.
Based on extensive feedback from the campus community and balanced with economic and technological realities, Ilee Rhimes, Ohio State CIO, is recommending the continuation of HomeNet at a reduced service level. Consistent with national trends, Ohio State's usage of dial-up services has declined sharply since 1999. The 2003 OSU Poll found that HomeNet utilization was 6.2% for undergraduates, 17% for graduate and professional, and 18.8% for faculty.
Each year, beginning July 1, after an evaluation of usage patterns and feedback from the community, the modem pool size for HomeNet will be re-evaluated to reflect the need for the service. An analysis is underway to determine the level of reduction for this academic year.
To ensure continuation of a high level of connectivity from off-campus, members of the University community currently using this service may want to find an alternate communications method.
