Installing Mathworks Products - Additional Tips

Installing Mathworks Products - Additional Tips

The install guides contained on your MATLAB media contain essentially all of the information you need to install MATLAB on your PC, Mac or on Unix/Linux. These additional tips may help.

***NOTE*** This tip sheet applies to Release 14 to 2007b of Mathworks products, but your license code will be unique to your status as faculty/staff or student. You will receive your PLP or license.dat license file via e-mail from OIT Customer Services.

NOTE: The PLP and the license.dat file noted below are for the Standard Configuration set of toolboxes for faculty/staff or the Student Configuration set for students. These are the campus agreement configuration (TAH) licenses. TAH stands for the OSU campus Total Academic Headcount license agreement. If you need additional toolboxes you will purchase those directly from The Mathworks. Please see http://oit.osu.edu/site_license, choose a platform and select MATLAB to see ordering procedures. On this site, also see "MATLAB TAH_Install_Guide.pdf", which you can download and print.

NOTE: TAH license codes expire each year in September. To continue to use MATLAB you will need to obtain new codes. Any renewal fees required for the Standard Configuration will be decided annually. There is no fee for the current school year.

Installing License Codes if You Have Child Licenses or are Converting Existing Licenses to the TAH License

If you purchase additional toolboxes not in the OSU Standard configuration, The Mathworks will provide you separate license code information called a Child License. You will use those codes along with your TAH license from the campus agreement configuration license codes.

A Child License is any license you already have or you purchase new for individual add-on toolboxes or blocksets (add-on tools) outside of the current Standard configuration. If you are installing a copy of MATLAB that will also have Child Licenses, you will have to combine your campus agreement TAH licenses with your Child Licenses so that all of your eligible toolboxes are enabled to run. To assist you with this process, please see the additional document entitled "MATLAB TAH Install Guide.pdf", noted above. In that document when it directs you to use your TAH license, it is referring to the license files you were sent via e-mail from OIT Customer Services for the Standard configuration. This document breaks down each situation you may face and describes how to apply the TAH with your Child Licenses.

"MATLAB TAH Install Guide.pdf" also covers cases where you have an existing MATLAB installation and you need to convert your license codes to the new campus configuration TAH license.

Installing a New Standard Configuration of MATLAB

If you are essentially installing a new copy of MATLAB or upgrading to a new version and are not using any add-on toolboxes (Child Licenses), you can follow the procedures below and use your Standard configuration license PLP (Windows) or license file (Unix/Linux/Mac).

PC Install

DO NOT install MATLAB into an existing MATLAB directory.

When the install screen asks for the Personal License Password enter the license code in the file you obtained from OIT Customer Services. You will not use the license.dat file.

This license code is sent as file, "winlic.dat". Please consult "install_guide.pdf" on the installation media for complete installation instructions.

License Renewal

If you are renewing your license, you will need your Mathworks install media. The Mathworks installer should start automatically when you insert the installation media. Otherwise click on "setup.exe" in your media's root folder. If you are updating your license expiration date only and not installing new toolboxes, check "Update" on the Welcome screen.

Windows Server

Please see "Setting Up a Network Installation" in " Installation Guide for Windows". This is available as "install_guide.pdf" on the installation media. Note that this section of the installation guide explains setup using the FLEXnet Publisher Licensing Module, a product of Macrovision Corporation. However, the license type available on the OSU license is a standalone/uncounted license. OSU does not have access to a license manager for installation. There is a way to install in a network mode however. Briefly, this is the procedure for configuring a Windows installation for use over the network. The steps to configure this are as follows:

  1. You will set up your network configuration per instructions in the installation guide, under "Network Configuration Options":
    • Remote Client Access Configuration
    • Local Client Access Configuration
  2. Install MATLAB and toolboxes on your license server using the Standalone PLP that has been provided via e-mail from OIT Customer Services. (The license manager will not be installed, just the products)
  3. When the installation is complete, replace the license.dat file from $MATLABbinwin32 directory with the Uncounted User License File (license.dat) from OIT Customer Services, where $MATLAB is the root MATLAB directory.

Once the license file has been replaced, you will be able to run MATLAB from a remote location. The uncounted license.dat file is not locked to the server and will allow anyone to access it for a license

NOTE: Users will not be able to launch MATLAB using Windows Remote Desktop by default. However, if you need access to a license file for RDP, you can contact Mathworks tech support and get it.

Unix/Linux

DO NOT install MATLAB into an existing MATLAB directory.

The license file, license.dat, contains the license you need to use to run MATLAB on your machine. Move your License File, license.dat, into the $MATLAB directory, where $MATLAB is the root MATLAB directory as chosen by you for installation. The installer looks for the license file in the $MATLAB directory. Save the license.dat file and start the installation process. Follow the on-screen instructions.

During installation the license.dat file will be copied from the $MATLAB directory to its permanent location. For UNIX/Linux it is $MATLAB/etc, where $MATLAB is the root MATLAB directory as chosen by you during installation.

Please consult "inst_doc.pdf" on the Install media for complete installation instructions.

License File Renewal

You will need to reinstall MATLAB to update your license file to a new expiration date. Locate your MATLAB media and perform the reinstall as noted above. First stop the License Manager. During the installation process the installer will discover that you have an existing license.dat file. It will then give you an opportunity to REPLACE the existing license.dat file with your new license.dat file. Click Continue to replace the license file and follow the instructions to complete the installation.

Mac

The license file, license.dat, contains the license you need to use to run MATLAB on your machine. Move your license file, license.dat, onto the desktop. This must be a plain text file. Even with TextEdit, you can create a rich text file, which will not work as a valid license file. The license file contains a code for Data Acquisition Toolbox; however, it is not available for Macintosh.

Save the license.dat file and start the installation process by inserting the install media. Double-click on the "Mathworks_Rnnnn" icon on the desktop, where "nnnn" is your version. A window opens containing an "Install for Mac OS X" icon. Double-click on the Install for Mac OS X icon to begin the installation. Follow the on-screen instructions.

The Installation guide for Macintosh is on the distribution media. It is highly recommended that you print a copy of this guide before you attempt installation as it contains information particularly on startup of the License Manager under MacOS X to run MATLAB. There are a number of situations that may cause the startup of the License Manager to fail. Please see the workarounds on pages 26-28.

Issue: MacOS 10.3.8, or later, users must use X11 for Mac OS X, which is included on the MacOS X media. To install X11 during Mac OS X installation you must select Custom Install. If you have already installed MacOS X you can add X11. This is described in "Read Before You Install Mac OS X". This document is available when you insert the first MacOS X install media.

License File Renewal

You will need to reinstall MATLAB to update your license file to a new expiration date. Locate the MATLAB media and perform the reinstall as noted above. During the installation process the installer will discover that you have an existing license.dat file. It will then give you an opportunity to REPLACE the existing license.dat file with your new license.dat file. Click Continue to replace the license file and follow the instructions to complete the installation.
