Mailing Lists: Auto-Delete-Subscribers

By default all new lists on the OSU Listprocessor (lists.acs.ohio-state.edu) are created with the setting auto-delete-subscribers. This means that if a message sent to the list bounces back with one or more bad address errors, the listprocessor will attempt to automatically unsubscribe those bad addresses from the list.

The automatic deletion doesn't always work. If the listprocessor can't detect the bad address in an error message, can't find the bad address in the subscriber file, or doesn't recognize an error message as being a bad address error the bad address will not be automatically removed. If a list is getting bad address errors that aren't being automatically removed, the bad address will need to be removed manually by the list owner.

If the listprocessor is able to recognize the error message, and locates the bad address in a subscriber file, a notification will appear near the top of the error message sent to owners:

>Automatic removal: user doe.9999@osu.edu
>(possibly mentioned below) will be removed from the system files.

and the address will be unsubscribed from the list. If this was done in error (the server or address was only temporarily unavailable) then the subscriber will need to be re-added - they can either resubscribe themself to the list, or the list owner can re-add them.

If a list owner wants to turn off this feature, they can send e-mail to:

listproc@lists.acs.ohio-state.edu

with no subject, and in the body of the message put:

conf listname listpassword no-auto-delete-subscribers

--where listname and listpassword should be replaced with the correct information for their list. This will set their list to no longer automatically attempt to unsubscribe invalid addresses. To re-enable this feature, a list owner can send mail to the listproc address, with no subject, and in the body of the message put:

conf listname listpassword auto-delete-subscribers

and the service will be re-enabled. for their list.
