Carmen: Respondus LockDown Browser

A Carmen instructor can require students to take Carmen quizzes with the Respondus LockDown Browser to create a more secure testing environment. When students take Carmen quizzes and exams with the LockDown Browser, they will be unable to:

  • print anything
  • copy anything to the clipboard
  • take screenshots of the browser/quiz questions
  • type in another URL (web address)
  • access other applications (such as Instant Messenger, or another browser)

The Lockdown Browser was made available in Columbus Campus University/OIT labs starting Wednesday September 19th, 2007. In the Labs you can find the Lockdown software...

  • On Windows:
    1. go to the "Start" menu
    2. click on "All Programs"
    3. click on "Respondus"
    4. select the "LockDown Browser" icon

  • On A Mac:
    1. Open the "Macintosh HD"
    2. click on the "Applications" folder
    3. click on the "Internet" folder
    4. double-click the "LockDown Browser" icon

Both Windows and Mac versions of the LockDown browser are available for downloading. If students attempt to take a locked quiz on a computer without LockDown installed, they will see a link to download the browser free of charge. This browser won't modify their current version browsers in any way.

The LockDown Browser is not intended to replace other browsers for regular Carmen use. This Carmen-specific browser should be used only for taking or reviewing online quizzes through Carmen.
