MATLAB Crashes In Windows Vista

When trying to install/run MATLAB on Windows Vista an error at the splash screen can cause the application to crash. If you encounter this, one possible fix is to set a system environment variable:

  1. From your Start/Windows button, click Control Panel.
  2. Click System and Maintenance, then System, then under Tasks, select Advanced System Settings. (The exact location/path to the Advanced System Settings window may vary depending on your specific edition of Vista)
  3. If necessary, click the "Advanced" tab.
  4. Click the Environment Variables button.
  5. Click New button under the System Variables list to create a new system variable.

Advanced System Settings - Environment Variables

  6. Name the variable: MATLAB_RESERVE_LO and set its value equal to 0.
  7. Click OK to exit the window and apply the changes.
  8. You may also need to log out of Windows or restart your system after making these changes.
